Responding to the destruction of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the Rebuild by Design Meadowlands project provides resilient solutions in flood-prone areas throughout a 5000 acre area on the Hackensack River. The project seeks to reduce flood risk by managing water flows, cultivating ecology, and energizing the community through new public area improvements.
The project engages the community in climate-change related issues and design solutions both through on-site interpretive signage and other accessible forms of graphic collateral, including a series of brochures and films.
The typeface, Akkurat Std, combined with flat black black-powder coated metal and refined icon graphics provide a modern, accessible, and recognizable identity, connecting multiple sites across the Meadowlands region. The signage is deployed in a myriad of ways throughout the area, providing environmental education and a strengthened connection to place for the Meadowlands community.
